A Response to Dr. Richard Choi’s lecture “The Trinity in the New Testament”

Remember: 2 Tim 2:23-26

23 But foolish and unlearned questions avoid, knowing that they do gender strifes.24 And the servant of the Lord must not strive; but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient,25 In meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth;26 And that they may recover themselves out of the snare of the devil, who are taken captive by him at his will.

Isa. 1:18 – Come now let us reason together, saith the Lord.

Outline of the Study:

  • -Godhead
  • -Subordination as described in the scriptures
  • -The Holy Spirit
  • -The Foundation of the Church

Theios (Strongs 2304) Divine (2x), Godhead (1x)

Theoitos (Strongs 2305) Divinity, Divine Nature, Godhead (1x)

Theotes (Strongs 2320) Deity, Godhead (1X)

In Minute 6:30 – Dr. Choi states all three are “mutually subordinate”, The Bible states the following that the Father states to His Son, but never did Jesus or the Spirit say to the Father:

  1. Sent His Son 1 John 4:14, 3:34
  2. Gave His Son a work to do John 17:4
  3. Commanded His Son what to say John 12:49
  4. Gave His Son power John 17:2
  5. Gave His Son authority John 5:27
  6. Told His Son to sit on His right hand Heb 1:13
  7. Anointed His Son Heb 1:9
  8. Gave His Spirit to His Son John 3:34
  9. Gave to His Son life John 5:26
  10. Gave His Son all power Matt 28:18
  11. Highly exalted His Son Phil 2:9
  12. Gave His Son a name Heb 1:4, Phil 2:9
  13. Gave all things into His Son’s hand John 3:35
  14. Committed all judgment unto His Son John 5:22, 27
  15. Christ always will be subject to His Father 1 Cor 15:28
  16. The Father is the head of Christ 1 Cor 11:3
  17. The God of our Lord Jesus Christ Heb 1:9
  18. The Son is an heir/inheritor Heb 1:2, 4

Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee. (Exodus 20:12)

In minute 7:19 Dr. Choi provides the trinity is a community of equals with the text:

I and my Father are one (John 10:30) This is only two, and is recognized as two in Seventh-day Adventist believe …27 from 1988: page 45 “Jesus Christ is ‘one in nature, in character, in purpose’ with God the Father. This quote is originally found in Patriarchs and Prophets page 34. How could the authors be so selective on page 34, but not be attentive regarding page 36 of the same book?

“Persona”

I agree with Dr Choi that the word person means “persona” in Latin, for we read:

“And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.”

The mask Dr. Choi talked about can be explained when the Son of God became the Son of Man. It is stated best the like this “He clothed his divinity with humanity.” 5BC 1126.8

Minute 21:00 Deny the Trinity – No foundation to build your church

Ever Since 1844, when the hour of God’s judgement began in the heavenly sanctuary and the advent movement of prophecy arose on the earth, there has been no lack of opposition to the Truth. It is a fact Seventh-day Adventist are to bear the message of truth to the world.

Recently, I met a former Mennonite family. They youngest son said to me, we found the Sabbath, The Truth about God and then the Spirit of Prophecy and never belonged to the SDA church, we are no longer Mennonites, but we are real Seventh-day Adventist- just as the Pioneers!

“Forasmuch then as we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Godhead is like unto gold, or silver, or stone, graven by art and man’s device.”

Acts 17:29

“According as the divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue: Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in this world through lust.”

2 Peter 1:3,4

Because that which may be known of God is manifest in (to) them; for God hath showed it unto them. For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead, so they were without excuse:”

Romans 1:19,20

The Father is ALL the fullness of the Godhead bodily

“Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.
For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily.”

Colossians 2:8,9

The Son of God is ALL the fullness of the Godhead manifested.

I have manifested thy name. . . (John 17:6)

“That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, of the Word of life; (For the life was manifested, and we have seen it, and bear witness, and shew unto you that eternal life, which was with the Father, and was manifested unto us;) That which we have seen and heard declare we unto you, that ye also may have fellowship with us: and truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ.”

1 John 1:1-3

The Spirit IN all the fullness of the Godhead

“For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.

“But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his. And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness. But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you.”

Romans 8:2,9-11

“God is Spirit” (John 4:24)

“…that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.” (John 3:6)

“It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.” (John 6:63)

“For as the Father hath life in himself; so hath he given to the Son to have life in himself.” (John 5:26)

Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.”

John 14:6

Who is the Godhead?

“I and my father are one” (John 10:30)

“I am one that bear witness of myself, and the Father that sent me beareth witness of me.” (John 8:18)

“That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me.”

(John 17:21)

“…our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son Jesus Christ.”

1 John 1:3

Subordination of the Son of God to His Father.

  • Not to be confused with the act of being inferior. (Phil. 2:6)

In Scripture God:

  • Sent His Son (1 John 4:14, 3:34)
  • Gave His Son a work to do (John 17:4)
  • Gave His Son life (John 5:26)
  • Gave His Son power (John 17:4)
  • Gave His Spirit to His Son (John 3:34)
  • Gave His Son all power (Matt 28:18)
  • The Father is the Head of Christ (1 Cor. 11:3)
  • Christ will always be subject to His Father (1 Cor. 15:28)
  • Subordination of the Son of God to His Father.
    • Not to be confused with the act of being inferior. (Phil. 2:6)

In Scripture God:

  • Sent His Son (1 John 4:14, 3:34)
  • Gave His Son a work to do (John 17:4)
  • Gave His Son life (John 5:26)
  • Gave His Son power (John 17:4)
  • Gave His Spirit to His Son (John 3:34)
  • Gave His Son all power or authority (Matt 28:18)
  • The Father is the Head of Christ (1 Cor. 11:3)
  • Christ will always be subject to His Father (1 Cor. 15:28)

Just as the Father is Life and gives His Son Life. The Son has Life and gives us Life (eternal life).

John 1:18 NRSV

No one has ever seen God. It is God the only Son, who is close to the Father’s heart, who has made him known.

“But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth In you.” (Romans 8:11)

“Paul, an apostle, (not of men, neither by man, but by Jesus Christ, and God the Father, who raised him from the dead;)” (Galatians 1:1)

“Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.” (Romans 6:4)

“But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me:” (John 15:26)

“Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you and shall be in you. I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you.” (John 14:17, 18)

“For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.” (2 Peter 1:21)

“Of which salvation the prophets have enquired and searched diligently, who prophesied of the grace that should come unto you: Searching what, or what manner of time the Spirit of Christ which was in them did signify, when it testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ, and the glory that should follow.” (1 Peter 1:10, 11)

Dr. Choi stated Person means “persona” in Latin.

The Third person is Jesus Christ divinity divested of the personality of humanity (RH 11/19/1908).

The Son of Man

Recently, talking with a friend who studied under Dr. Choi and believes as he was taught answered this question without thought. He stated, “Jesus often spoke of Himself in “third person” as the Son of Man”.

I said you just said it! The Third person is Jesus Christ himself. His  divinity divested of the personality of humanity (RH 11/19/1908). He went away saying he will let the theologians work it out.

Deny the trinity? – No foundation to build the church – As stated by Dr. Choi.

“According to the grace of God which is given unto me, as a wise masterbuilder, I have laid the foundation, and another buildeth thereon. But let every man take heed how he buildeth thereupon. For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ.” (1 Cor 3:10, 11)

“And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone;” (Eph. 2:20)  – Here Paul laid the same foundation as the prophets of the O.T.

“But this I confess unto thee, that after the way which they call heresy, so worship I the God of my fathers, believing all things which are written in the law and in the prophets:” (Acts 24:14)

We are called to Confess!

Men arose to draw away disciples after themselves (Acts 20:30)

The apostle Paul warned of teachers of error who had overthrown “the faith of some” “Nevertheless the Foundation of God standeth sure” (2 Tim 2:18,19)

They went out from us (1 John 2:19)

Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils (1 Tim 4:1)

To “depart from the faith” is to disbelieve or reject the plain words of the Bible; for “faith cometh by hearing, and hearing the word of God”

Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils.” (1 Tim 4:1)

“To ‘depart from the faith’ is to disbelieve or reject the plain words of the Bible; for ‘faith cometh by hearing, and hearing the Word of God.’ It is the ‘Word’ of God, then we are to hear; and it is by hearing this Word that faith comes… If by human interpetations, explanations, and mystifications that Book is allowed to be so covered up that it is no longer the voice of God to the soul, the Bible is as verily driven from the mind as if one were an out-an-out infidel.” (A. O. Tait, Heralds of the Morning, p.61)

2 Cor. 11:4

For if he that cometh preacheth another Jesus, whom we have not preached, or if ye receive another spirit, which ye have not received, or another gospel, which ye have not accepted, ye might well bear with him.

Allos – another/ similar Jesus

Hetros – another / opposite spirit and/or gospel

The real Jesus in the Son of God from everlasting. Another Jesus is similar, could we say, “as only a son on earth?”

The real Spirit is the “life giving” spirit of Jesus. Another spirit is received by those seeking one other than Jesus.

The beginning of the ‘real’ gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. Another Gospel is received by those accepting another teaching.

Will you confess the same Jesus that ascend and will return in like manner?
